What are you living for? What is your actual daily life truly oriented around? In a world where many chase after success, recognition, and material gain, there remains a deeper question in the human heart – what truly satisfies? What is the reward that endures beyond circumstances, beyond achievements, and beyond possessions? In Genesis 15:1, God speaks to ‘Abram’ with a powerful and life-altering truth: “I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.” Not just a provider of blessings, but the very essence of the blessing itself. God does not merely give good things – He gives us Himself. And in knowing Him, we possess what can never be taken away. In today’s message titled “Our exceedingly great reward,” Evangelist Paul Acquah invites you to discover that your fulfilment is not found in what God gives, but in who He is. Be blessed as you listen!
Know that God is our exceedingly great reward. “After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, [a]your exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1). The NIV says, “Your very great reward”, This happenedafter Abraham risked his life to rescue Lot and refused goods or items from the King of Sodom. God appeared to him and said, “Do not be afraid… I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward”. God is the Reward: God is not just the giver of rewards, but He is the reward itself. His presence, protection (as a shield), and intimacy are superior to any physical or earthly gain. The ultimate blessing for a believer is God Himself, rather than material gain. God Himself—His presence, character, and relationship—is the ultimate blessing, rather than just material wealth or miraculous intervention. He rewards us of his presence
God is our exceedingly great reward. We are encouraged here to find our fulfilment and contentment in knowing who God is, rather than relying on external, material blessings.
Genesis 15:1 pairs the reward with “I am your shield.” This means that God provides both protection and security. God assured Abram that. I’m your shield; or, I am a shield to you, present with you, actually caring for you. To know that God himself is a shield to his people, to secure them from all evils, a shield ready for them, and a shield round about them, should silence all perplexing, tormenting fears. When God is viewed as the “exceedingly great reward,” it eliminates the fear of loss or the fear of the future, as the greatest asset is already secure. God is the Reward, Not Just the Giver.
While God blesses people, the greatest reward is possessing God Himself. Shift your focus from “Things” to God. A lot of people often settle for less by focusing on material blessings or circumstances. We need to shift our focus from chasing “things” to seeking God, who is “more than enough” (Mathew 6:33). That’s why God rewards those who diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6). “Without faith, it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to God” (Hebrews 11:6). So, what pleases God? We always want to please God. We want to believe that he’s pleased with us. We go through all of our different works of the flesh trying to please God with our things that we do, and so on and so forth. But really what he wants is, for us to believe in him. As a matter of fact, there’re really four things here that it tells us that he wants. He wants our faith. He wants us to believe that he exists. That he is. That everywhere we go, God is. We’re never, ever, ever without God. Believe that he exits , and he is a rewarder and he is your exceedingly great reward.
God has already provided everything needed through grace, and realising this will change your life from striving to receiving. That means shifting from a mindset of, forced effort (“I have to do this and that “) to a state of surrender, and moving away from relying on self-effort to trusting and seeking God. We need to put our trust in God. He is our very great reward. When we need protection, he’s there for us, when we need provision, he is there for us. When we need help, he is there, when we need healing, he is there, God in the midst of us is mighty.
God is my reward, when you are disappointed, He’s your reward. When they say there’s no way, He’s your reward. God was saying to Abraham, I can give you over and above your expectation, I’m your exceedingly great reward. You need to shift your focus to seeking and trusting God because he’s all that you need.
God is your reward. he will supply all your needs. In your business, he is your reward, In your marriage, he is your reward, in your career he is your reward , in your ministry, he is your reward. God is the owner of the world and its fullness. “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1). God owns everything.
“For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine” (Psalm 50:10-11). Do you have a court case or problem with your manager or supervisor? The king’s heart is in his hands, he will turn it in your favour. “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes” ( Proverbs 21:1). It shows that God holds supreme authority over even the most powerful earthly rulers, capable of directing their decisions and actions to bring about His purposes, including bringing favour to His people. He says I’m your exceedingly great reward; I’m your portion. I’ve given you my all , my life, you have the fullness of the God head. I’m your reward, you share in my inheritance.
